Finishing Touches: Hand-painted Friezes and Wall Ornament for Arts & Crafts homes:
This will be a presentation on hand-painted friezes and wall decoration. CJ and Barbara will give a short background presentation on the history of hand-painted interiors, showing historical examples, and some of CJ’s custom friezes. Then, the presentation will move into CJ’s studio where he is currently working on the design and color development for a new project. He will give some insight into the process and participants will be able to watch a live demonstration. There will be time for discussion and questions during the presentation..

Live Studio Demonstration through Zoom with artist CJ Hurley:
A virtual visit to our studio where CJ will be painting and give a glimpse into his process. Watch as he renders one of his custom Monogram paintings – Watercolor and India Ink on Handmade Paper. He’ll talk about the design and painting process and he and Barbara will offer information about the significance of the monogram paintings. We’ll start the program with a little history of our business and CJ’s art, some photos of the historic building where we work, and we’ll leave plenty of time for questions and discussion.

Live Zoom Presentation and Q&A with Color Consultant Barbara Pierce
Using information that she regularly shares with clients and presents in lectures across the country, Barbara will discuss choosing colors for exterior painting and offer practical advice for participants. The discussion will be open for questions after the presentation. Live Studio Presentation through Zoom
A virtual visit to the Century Arts studio. Designers Barbara and CJ will share the process of a recent stained-glass project from the design to finished product.
We will discuss a compelling stained-glass project commissioned by clients. This studio visit will be one-part show and tell of our recent project, insight into the in-depth process that the glass maker went through (Roycroft Renaissance Master Peggy Eisensmith) and information on the process of commissioning a custom piece of stained-glass.

Live Studio Demonstration through Zoom with artist CJ Hurley.
This will be another virtual visit to CJ’s studio while he is painting, and he and Barbara discuss a current art and interior design project. They designed a bathroom for clients in Oregon, and the final touch is the decorative painting of the door of the medicine cabinet. After, the cabinet was built, the door was shipped from Oregon to our studios in Pennsylvania for CJ to paint. Join us as we discuss the project, and watch CJ work on painting the door.

| When CJ lectures about the Arts & Crafts Movement, it’s always in terms of it being a significant Art Movement and he places it within the context of Art History. He helps us see that it was one of the most influential art movements in international art history. Not since the Renaissance has there been such a far-reaching artistic legacy, the impact of which not only led to modernism, but the reverberations from the Arts & Crafts are still felt in the world today. This well illustrated talk highlights two teams of Artist Collaborators; the McNairs and the Larssons. They are all people who helped shape the form the Arts & Crafts Movement took in their respective nations. | ||

| In conjunction with his current exhibit, “Houses, Landscapes, Flowers and Dreams” CJ will discuss the Romantic Movement in Art and Literature. He will make connections to Romanticism and the ideals of the Arts & Crafts Movement and offer his insight into Romanticism’s continuing presence in the modern world. CJ sees Romantic thought as an essential part of being human and has a special regard for Romanticism’s position regarding nature. This is a topic he often explores in his art and he will be relating these themes to his paintings on exhibit in the Graffiti Gallery. In conjunction with the exhibit, “Houses, Landscapes, Flowers and Dreams” and supported by a grant from Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts. | ||

| In conjunction with the exhibit, “Houses, Landscapes, Flowers and Dreams” and supported by a grant from Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts. The 25 minute long documentary tells the story of CJ’s primary artistic influences – from Buddhism and his love affair with the art and culture of Japan, to the influences he shared with lifelong friend and author, S Alexander Smith, who narrates the film. Viewers will also gain an understanding of CJ’s earlier involvement with the “Lowbrow” and “Cartoon Surrealism” art movements of the 1980’s and 90’s, and how this subject matter transitioned to his work today – driven by the values of the Arts & Crafts Movement. | ||
