When CJ lectures about the Arts & Crafts Movement, it’s always in terms of it being a significant Art Movement and he places it within the context of Art History. He helps us see that it was one of the most influential art movements in international art history. Not since the Renaissance has there been such a far-reaching artistic legacy, the impact of which not only led to modernism, but the reverberations from the Arts & Crafts are still felt in the world today.
This well illustrated talk highlights two teams of Artist Collaborators; the McNairs and the Larssons. They are all people who helped shape the form the Arts & Crafts Movement took in their respective nations. |

In this well illustrated presentation, Barbara will discuss the importance of understanding architecture and proper placement of color for exterior painting. She will offer tips and ideas to think about when selecting colors for your own home, touching on the idea of honoring the history of a home while also respecting the personality and wishes of the modern-day homeowners. The talk concludes with a summary of information home and building owners need to know when interviewing painters and reviewing bids, as well as tips for achieving the desired results in the completed project. |

In conjunction with the A&C Society lectures, we will be offering consultations at Modern Bungalow in Denver the following day. In a 30-minute consultation you’ll have the opportunity to discuss your specific painting project. Registration is required. Bring good quality photos and notes about your goals and any challenges you are facing. For exterior projects, it is a good idea to also bring photos that show the setting of your home (landscape, neighboring properties), roof, foundation, masonry, etc.

In conjunction with his current exhibit, “Houses, Landscapes, Flowers and Dreams” CJ will discuss the Romantic Movement in Art and Literature. He will make connections to Romanticism and the ideals of the Arts & Crafts Movement and offer his insight into Romanticism’s continuing presence in the modern world. CJ sees Romantic thought as an essential part of being human and has a special regard for Romanticism’s position regarding nature. This is a topic he often explores in his art and he will be relating these themes to his paintings on exhibit in the Graffiti Gallery. In conjunction with the exhibit, “Houses, Landscapes, Flowers and Dreams” and supported by a grant from Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts. |
Event: Documentary Screening From Dystopia to Utopia: The Artistic Visions of CJ Hurley |

In conjunction with the exhibit, “Houses, Landscapes, Flowers and Dreams” and supported by a grant from Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts. The 25 minute long documentary tells the story of CJ’s primary artistic influences – from Buddhism and his love affair with the art and culture of Japan, to the influences he shared with lifelong friend and author, S Alexander Smith, who narrates the film.
Viewers will also gain an understanding of CJ’s earlier involvement with the “Lowbrow” and “Cartoon Surrealism” art movements of the 1980’s and 90’s, and how this subject matter transitioned to his work today – driven by the values of the Arts & Crafts Movement. |
