Live Studio Demonstration through Zoom with artist CJ Hurley:
A virtual visit to our studio where CJ will be painting and give a glimpse into his process. Watch as he renders one of his custom Monogram paintings – Watercolor and India Ink on Handmade Paper. He’ll talk about the design and painting process and he and Barbara will offer information about the significance of the monogram paintings.  We’ll start the program with a little history of our business and CJ’s art, some photos of the historic building where we work, and we’ll leave plenty of time for questions and discussion.

Live Studio Presentation through Zoom 
A virtual visit to the Century Arts studio. Designers Barbara and CJ will share the process of a  recent stained-glass project from the design to finished product.   We will discuss a compelling stained-glass project commissioned by clients. This studio visit  will be one-part show and tell of our recent project, insight into the in-depth process that the  glass maker went through (Roycroft Renaissance Master Peggy Eisensmith) and information  on the process of commissioning a custom piece of stained-glass.

Live Studio Demonstration through Zoom with artist CJ Hurley. This will be another virtual visit to CJ’s studio while he is painting, and he and Barbara  discuss a current art and interior design project. They designed a bathroom for clients in  Oregon, and the final touch is the decorative painting of the door of the medicine cabinet.  After, the cabinet was built, the door was shipped from Oregon to our studios in Pennsylvania  for CJ to paint. Join us as we discuss the project, and watch CJ work on painting the door.

She discusses the importance of understanding architecture and proper placement of color for exterior painting. She presents practical information, which attendees can easily translate to their own projects. She offers tips and ideas to think about when selecting colors for your own home.
Keynote Presentation: Artistic Couples of the Arts & Crafts Movement Frances Macdonald & Herbert McNair and Carl & Karin Larsson Colorado Arts & Crafts Society, Annual Symposium; Boettcher Mansion Golden, CO January 20, 2018
When CJ lectures about the Arts & Crafts Movement, it’s always in terms of it being a significant Art Movement and he places it within the context of Art History. He helps us see that it was one of the most influential art movements in international art history. Not since the Renaissance has there been such a far-reaching artistic legacy, the impact of which not only led to modernism, but the reverberations from the Arts & Crafts are still felt in the world today. This well illustrated talk highlights two teams of Artist Collaborators; the McNairs and the Larssons. They are all people who helped shape the form the Arts & Crafts Movement took in their respective nations.

In this well illustrated presentation, Barbara discusses the importance of understanding architecture and proper placement of color for exterior painting. She will offer tips and ideas to think about when selecting colors for your own home, touching on the idea of honoring the history of a home while also respecting the personality and wishes of the modern-day homeowners. The talk concludes with a summary of information home and building owners need to know when interviewing painters and reviewing bids, as well as tips for achieving the desired results in the completed project.

In this well illustrated workshop, Barbara and CJ discuss the importance of understanding architecture and correct placement of color for exterior painting. They present practical information, which attendees can easily translate to their own projects. The presentation touches on the idea of honoring the history of a home while also respecting the personality and wishes of modern day homeowners. The presentation offers ideas to think about when selecting your own exterior color story. In depth information will be provided to help homeowners understand the information they need to know before meeting with painters to secure bids. Attendees will gain confidence in understanding how to determine the number of colors needed and proper color placement for Arts & Crafts homes.

Balancing Then & Now: Understanding Architecture and Color for historic Exteriors Oil City Library March 27, 2018

Event: Lecture Romanticism: Its Legacy in Art and Literature Student Center Auditorium, Venango College of Clarion University. 1801 W 1st St. Oil City, PA May 5th, 2018; 10:30am-12:00 pm
In conjunction with his current exhibit, “Houses, Landscapes, Flowers and Dreams” CJ will discuss the Romantic Movement in Art and Literature. He will make connections to Romanticism and the ideals of the Arts & Crafts Movement and offer his insight into Romanticism’s continuing presence in the modern world. CJ sees Romantic thought as an essential part of being human and has a special regard for Romanticism’s position regarding nature. This is a topic he often explores in his art and he will be relating these themes to his paintings on exhibit in the Graffiti Gallery. In conjunction with the exhibit, “Houses, Landscapes, Flowers and Dreams” and supported by a grant from Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts.
Event: Documentary Screening From Dystopia to Utopia: The Artistic Visions of CJ Hurley Student Center Auditorium, Venango College of Clarion University. 1801 W 1st St. Oil City, PA May 15th, 2018; 6:00pm-7:00 pm
In conjunction with the exhibit, “Houses, Landscapes, Flowers and Dreams” and supported by a grant from Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts. The 25 minute long documentary tells the story of CJ’s primary artistic influences – from Buddhism and his love affair with the art and culture of Japan, to the influences he shared with lifelong friend and author, S Alexander Smith, who narrates the film. Viewers will also gain an understanding of CJ’s earlier involvement with the “Lowbrow” and “Cartoon Surrealism” art movements of the 1980’s and 90’s, and how this subject matter transitioned to his work today – driven by the values of the Arts & Crafts Movement.
